5

Hard to believe we have another 5 year old in the house!!!!

Oh Evan, you are a conundrum. You’re so adorable, sweet, funny and charming. You’re just like your daddy. Yet, you’ve got a temper, you hold a grudge (though not for very long), and you’ve got a flair for the dramatic and a love of music. So you’re just like me. Hmmmmm. I suppose you are a perfect combination of us both!!

What a surprise you were. You were not supposed to be possible. But you are here. And the possibilities for YOU are endless. You show such talent, and such promise, both academically and otherwise. I wonder if you’ll be a musician like Granddad. Or an actress like Mommy. Or a computer geek like Daddy…. Whatever it is, you’ll be great at it, and I’ll beam with pride!

Happy Birthday, little man. We love you!!! xoxo

3

I don’t know where to begin. I feel a little bit overwhelmed by the fact that my daughter is three years old today. I don’t know why it feels so much more profound than when each of my boys turned three…. Perhaps it is the fact that she is my baby, that she is the last one. Perhaps it is the fact that she stuns me every day with her smarts and her sense of humor. Perhaps I just never believed that that little pink bundle who relied on me so heavily and barely slept for the first 14 months of her life would ever be big enough or independent enough to pedal her own bike, brush her own teeth, and keep up with the big boys.

The truth is, she does more than keep up with the boys, and she’s not a baby anymore. But she is such a little lady – her manners are beyond reproach, and she cleans up after herself. And, well, just LOOK at her….

She takes my breath away.

I’ll never forget the moment I learned I was having a girl – the shock, the happiness, the disbelief, and the fear that they had it wrong. I’m so glad they didn’t. Yesterday she looked at me and said “I want to be like you Mommy.” My first reaction was of course, “Awwwwwwww!!” My second was “Um, you might want to think a little harder about that….”  :)

Happy Birthday sweet, sweet, Madelyn. Mommy loves you more than you will ever imagine possible. xoxoxo

12 Years and Counting....

So much has gone on since my last post - summer camp for the boys, vacation, Tyler starting kindergarten (!), Evan starting his last year of preschool (!), etc.!!  We'll explore those things soon.  But the most important thing TODAY, is that it is our anniversary!!

Twelve - TWELVE!! years ago today, I married the most amazing  man.  You think when you get married that you are the most in love you could ever be.  But you're wrong.  I had always heard people say that they are "more in love now than when they got married", and I would think, how is that possible??  But now I know.

It's not just "more in love", it's a different kind of love.  One strenthened by time, triumphs, struggles. One shaped by experiences - together, and apart.  One deepened by the birth of children and the creation of a family unit.  If someone asked me to tell them how much in love I am with Mitch, I couldn't answer them.  It is immeasurable.

So here's to us!!  Let's go another 50 years, shall we??  xoxo

Yes, I am one of THOSE moms!!

And I’m not ashamed of it! I very proudly display the make-up of my family unit in the form of stick figures on the rear window of my minivan. It’s one of the things I couldn’t wait to do when I got my minivan – buy those darn stickers and put them on!

When I did that, Maddy was just a bitty little baby. Today, I finally accepted the fact that she is no longer so, and it was time to swap out her sticker. She can speak full sentences, make song requests, cop an attitude, and she has a full head of hair. “Baby” sticker just wasn’t a true representation anymore. The “Little Girl” sticker has been stashed away in the top glove box for two years just waiting for this day.

“Little Girl” sticker takes up more room than “Baby” sticker, so I had to move one “Little Boy” and one “Cat” sticker over just a bit. But never for one moment did I consider removing one “Cat” sticker all together. Though Felix is no longer with us, he will remain part of our family forever, even in stick figure sticker form.

So there she is, no longer a baby with a top knot, but a little girl with a pig-tails.  My little princess, growing up. In real life, and on my rear window.  And Felix?  I took the “Dog” sticker (which we’ll NEVER use) and cut it up, fashioning a halo to put over the head of our dearly departed pet.

We're a handsome group, dontcha think??  :)

The Good After The Bad

Fortunately, we also had some happiness last week.  Tyler graduated from preschool!!

Seriously, how cute is that???  Never expected little tiny caps and gowns.  So adorable!!  It was a nice morning, at the same venue that they had had the Christmas program.  Only this time, it wasn’t the whole school, just the “4’s” and the Junior Kindergarteners.  Each class had a little performance first – Tyler participated in a square dance!  Here he is with his partner, and friend, Charlie (the one with all the brown curly hair! J).

I have some video too, but it is very loooooong, and frankly, not very riveting, so I’m choosing not to post it J.

Then it was time for the presentation of the “Certificates of Achievement”.  Now THIS video is worth posting!!

Wow. So cute – if I do say so myself!! Mommy and Daddy were VERY PROUD!!!

The end of an era. And time for the next step! Back on a beautiful morning in April, I took Tyler up to Glenkirk Elementary to register for kindergarten!!!! We are very fortunate to have the school right in our neighborhood within walking distance. Here we are about to set out on our walk to the school:

Once we got there, we sat at a table where Tyler could color while I filled out all the paperwork.  Eventually (it took a long time!), a teacher came over to check it all and make sure I had brought all the proper documentation.  Then it was time to wait for another teacher who would take Tyler off to another table, without me, to put him through an evaluation.  I was getting nervous about how he would react about going off with this stranger, because he kept playing shy with all the other people who were at the table with us.  I hoped we wouldn’t have a problem.  But when the time (finally!) came, he leapt off the chair and trotted off with this woman as though he’d known her all his life!!  Here they are on the other side of the room:

I could hear him counting for her, and see him writing. My heart skipped a beat and I teared up as I watched. My baby - gearing up for kindergarten!!  Again, wow.

Not that it hasn’t been a long time coming. You always hear it: “Where has the time gone?” “Time sure flies!” Well, truth be told, I don’t feel that way. Not now anyway. I’ve felt every bit of the last five years, and very rarely felt like it was flying by. Some days seem to pass more quickly than others, yes, but every one of those days has stayed with me. I don’t say this in a negative way, it’s just the way I feel. I struggle with parenting on a daily basis all the while embracing it. Tyler and I have always butted heads, I think because we’re equally stubborn, but I feel as though the tide might be turning. I’m doing my best to explore better methods of dealing with his intense personality and over time, I believe it will get easier – for both of us. The one thing that is never in question though, even when I need a break from him, is the love I have for this child. It is indescribable.

So many more adventures ahead!!!

Loss

Last week, our family suffered a great loss. We had to have our beloved cat, Felix, put to sleep after a long illness.

Felix came to us from “the streets”. Back in our first year of marriage, we were living in a modest (read: small) condo in Manassas. Just Mitch, and George, and me. There was this woman in our neighborhood, Susie, who we jokingly referred to as the “crazy cat lady”. While she was clearly a bit unusual, she indeed had a good heart. She took it upon herself to feed and care for all the feral cats that came around. She had a friend who was a mobile vet who would neuter any of the cats that Susie managed to capture.

But Felix was different.  He wasn’t wild.  He wasn’t skittish.  He seemed to WANT to be with people, to be owned.  Mitch was quite taken with him and wanted to take him in.  I was reluctant at first.  This cat had clearly been living outdoors for a while.  I had to think about what diseases he might have that could affect George.  But after the mobile vet had neutered him, and treated him for fleas and ear mites, I relented.  This vet also gave us advice on how to slowly introduce Felix to George in the least disruptive way possible.  After all, I had had George since he was seven weeks old – how might he react to another male cat in the home?  And would Felix finally show his wildness?  We did as the vet advised, keeping the cats separated for a few days.  It was kind of difficult to do, and seemed a little silly after a while, so we decided to just bite the bullet and see what happened.  So we removed all partitions and waited.  George and Felix slowly walked up to each other, gave each other a good sniff, and that was it.  From that moment, they behaved like litter mates.

I had been so worried about bringing Felix into our home and into our lives, but I never regretted it. The first time we brought him in, he went straight to the litter box, then jumped up on the couch, curled up and went to sleep. We decided he must have belonged to someone at some point and he had either run away, or been discarded. In either case, some other family’s loss was truly our gain.

For eleven years, Felix was the model pet. A bit mischievous at times, but always sweet and cuddly. He was the perfect fit with us, and with George. When the children started arriving, Felix remained calm, but kept his distance as he was no fool! Over time, he became more and more patient with them. Everyone who encountered Felix agreed that he was one of the coolest cats around….

For the past seven months or so, Felix had been losing weight.  Yet, he never stopped eating.  He basically camped out in the kitchen full time and begged to be fed all the time.  He’d had several tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, etc., seen multiple vets, yet none of them was able to come to a definitive answer as to what was wrong.  The only thing they knew to be true was that he continued to lose weight, he was severely anemic, and he was clearly never going to recover from whatever this was.  We were told that we could spend thousands more on diagnostics, but even if they found what was wrong, the treatment would be steroids which he was already on and they were doing no good.  He also had asthma which seemed to be getting worse.  We spent several weeks wrestling with what to do, hoping that at some point, there would be a clear sign.  While there wasn’t a point where he appeared to be at the very end, we thought hard about what he must be feeling.  Starving ALL THE TIME; using the litter box constantly and having other bowel issues that caused him to be cleaning himself almost neurotically; coughing and wheezing daily.  We decided we couldn’t prolong what must be so painful for him any longer.  After a final, sad conversation with his regular vet, who assured me that it was the most loving thing to do, we made the appointment.

It was a sad day.  The boys were at school, and Mitch met me and Maddy at the vet’s office.  We took our time saying our good-byes and many, many, many tears were shed.  We can only hope that this awesome, sweet, precious animal knew how much we loved him and how much he brought to our lives.  I think he knew.  As I held his face in my hands, crying and kissing him, and telling him how much we loved him, he didn’t even struggle to get away or get down off the table in a “WTH?!?!?” panic.  He just calmly stared back at me as if acknowledging that he was indeed, ready to go.

It is still difficult, and I suspect it will be for a while. Mitch and I keep expecting to see/trip over him EVERY TIME we walk into the kitchen. This afternoon I swore I heard his “meee-wrow”. The kids have realized he has gone, and George keeps looking for him. The irony. All those years ago I was worried about putting George together with Felix. Now I worry about how he’ll handle being apart from him.

He is back with us now, and will always hold a place of reverence in our home, and in our hearts.

R.I.P. Felix the cat.  You were a truly awesome pet and will be dearly, dearly missed.  We love you.  xoxo

5

Today, Tyler turned 5. Every birthday is a milestone. The first birthday is momentous, the second, third and fourth are special too. But turning five, I feel, is a really big deal! I don’t know why.

Today, Tyler turned 5. Five years ago, I stood by in a hospital room and watched another woman give birth to my son. It was amazing, and frightening at the same time. The unknown, the uncertainty, the pure elation! Life hasn’t been the same since that day.

Today, Tyler turned 5. The baby that was handed over to me in a hospital far away, making me a mother, has grown into a young boy, now just six months away from entering kindergarten.  Wow.

Here is the birthday boy, in all his blue-eyed glory…

Happy birthday, my sweet, complicated, smart, precious boy.  Mommy and Daddy love you dearly!!

My Funny Valentines...

Here is my crew this morning, dressed in their Valentine's garb.  My first thought on this photo is that it would be better if they would all smile and look at the camera at the same time, and if Maddy had agreed to put down the purple plastic purse (she held onto it for dear life - as if I was trying to take her oxygen away!).  My second thought is, meh, then it wouldn't be natural, right?

In any case, Happy Valentine's Day to one and all, but most especially to my greatest loves, Mitch, Tyler, Evan, and Madelyn. XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO *SMOOCHES*

42

Well, in about an hour from now, I will officially be 42 years old.  How did that happen??  Eh, it's not so bad.  I'm in the best shape of my life and I've got a beautfiul little family to share my world with.  I guess I'm just a little taken aback by how I look in all the pictures I tried to take of myself today.  Perhaps it's because my arms aren't long enough and a 42 year old woman should never be photographed this close up - especially with a camera phone.

But for our gas meter crapping out on us this morning and spending the first half of the day with no heat and panicking that the stove wouldn't be fixed on time to get the cupcakes baked, it's been a nice day.  The boys presented me with "surprise" cards this morning, after getting (and remembering!) instructions from daddy last night.  I got lots of lovely calls, emails, and 'posts to my timeline' on Facebook.  The gas DID get fixed on time and mom baked some DELICIOUS cupcakes!  And hubby returned home from work this evening with a dozen beautiful pink roses.  Topping it off tomorrow will be "date night" with Mitch, as the boys will be spending the night with Fammy and Granddad and my mom will be watching Maddy.  It's nice to have a night out alone once a year so we can, you know, talk about the kids!

Ok, I've had my third cupcake and it's time to retire for the night.  But before I go, a parting shot of how the world really gets to see me - sporting my new glasses.... WITH PROGRESSIVE LENSES.  Oy, I'm old! :)

The Zoo!!

Well, it's been nearly a month and a half, but it's still worth posting about.  Friday, December 30th was a particularly mild day, so mom and I decided to pack up the kids and head down to the Smithsonian National Zoo.  One might ask, "Why would you need to VISIT the zoo when you LIVE in one??"  Well, because we all love REAL animals, and sometimes you just need to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!!  :)

We didn't tell the boys ahead of time that we were going because a) they wouldn't have shut up about it or stop asking what time we were leaving and b) in case something came up, they wouldn't be disappointed if we had to cancel.  I use this method pretty much whenever I have something fun planned. I learned it the hard way.  Anyway, here is the unveiling of the plan, the morning of:

We decided to be well prepared, and frugal.  We knew the kids wouldn't be able (or willing) to walk around the zoo all day, so we brought the stroller for Mads, and the wagon for Tyler and Evan.  We also packed our own picnic lunch, snacks and drinks.  This saved us a fortune!  As a matter of fact, but for the ice creams we got on the way out of the zoo, the only thing we paid for all day was the parking.

I didn't get a lot of great pictures, but let's see what we have...

Zebra!!!  (in case you didn't know that)

LOVE this gorgeous Cheetah!  Also, love my great zoom lens because obviously we were not this close!

Since we got there when the zoo first opened, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian were still lounging around inside the Panda House eating bamboo instead of wandering around outside.  So we didn't get to see them as well as we wanted, but still got a bit of a look.  This was the only face shot I got:

The rest were all backsides!!  It's as if these crafty pandas know exactly what is going on (I'm SURE they do!), and are purposely not allowing anyone to get a good picture!!

Check this out:

Can you believe they just have this crate out in the open??  Just sitting there in the middle of the walkway through the Panda House for anyone to lean or climb on??  It seems to me it should be held in higher regard... Or maybe I'm just weird.

Red Pandas!  These guys were really cute.  It was hard to get shots of them though because they were really playful and running around.

Awesome elephants.

These Meerkats were a RIOT.  They were crazy and Maddy LOVED them.  One of them charged the glass where she was standing and she didn't even flinch.  She just giggled!

Orangutans. These guys were entertaining as they swung overhead on the "O Line" (the Orangutan Transport System!)

Ah, and my favorites, the tigers and lions.  Such incredibly beautiful creatures.

At the far end of the zoo, there is a kid's farm with the usual cows and pigs and goats. Nothing too exotic, but the kids enjoyed it.  Tyler particularly enjoyed the fish pond.

After the farm, we hit an ice cream vending machine and started the long (uphill!) walk back to to the parking lot.  It was easy for the kids since they were being pushed/pulled along.  But it was quite a workout for mom and me!!
It was a great day, topped off by a very peaceful ride home!!  Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!

Next adventure??  Who knows!!
